A planting day for a new area of the Kellys Bush project. This one will start at 8am onwards (16th August) and be run by Mitre 10's Helping Hands crew. We will not only be planting but making trails, a bridge and seats. There will be a barbeque lunch provided to volunteers. If possible bring spades and gloves.

Ronga Reserve planting day.  We’d love to have your company as we plant more trees into the fabulous alluvial forest DOC reserve at Ronga in the Rai Valley.  The trees from previous plantings have had a great year (despite our worries of a drought early on!) and our next year’s plants are waiting to go in.  This very special little forest has giant totara and matai, and is home to NZ’s long-tailed bats.  It is surrounded by the Ronga and…

Zac Milner will talk to us about his work on Gough Island.  Zac works for Kaitiaki o Ngahere, an ecological restoration and biosecurity company and recently travelled to Gough Island in the south Atlantic Ocean to help with the management of the invasive pest plant Sagina procumbens – a small herbaceous ground-cover plant that has the potential to smother large areas of ground and out-compete the native vegetation.   Zac was training the field team in weed control methodology, assessing the…

Edible Paradise is a wonderful film from the Localising Food project, and focuses on the ability to create urban food gardens, with an emphasis on the work done post-Christchurch earthquakes.  It is inspiring, uplifting, and definitely food for thought. Journalist Paul Bensemann, who as a 19 year old travelled to Fiordland to be involved in the ‘Save Manapouri’ campaign, will be discussing his new book, Fight for the Forests, on Monday October 22 as part of the Page & Blackmore Readers and Writers programme. Bensemann spent the past three years travelling New Zealand to interview many of the activists involved in campaigns to permanently protect New Zealand’s unique native forests.
