What you can grow on a typical suburban property

Most suburban properties have some things in common. Check out the diagram of a typical suburban property in the .pdf page below, and identify similar patches in your property.

Then look at the .pdf with suggestions for what you could grow in those patches, and get inspired with all the possibilities!

If your place has some different sites, consider these general ideas:

  • A sun-soaked site: Grapes, peaches, nectarines, cherries, plums, greengages, apples, figs, pears
  • A site with afternoon sun and exposure to rain-bearing winds: Apricots, gooseberries, cherries, blackberries, nectarines, peaches, grapes, greengages, raspberries, apples, red/white currants
  • A site with morning sun, but dry and open to cold winds: Gooseberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries, apples, currants, plums, early pears
  • A cold site: Cordon currants and gooseberries, early cooking apples, fan-trained damsons (that will ripen later)
