Innovation Award Winners – Heke Homemade Herbals

Posted by Karen Driver

Utilising a steep, terraced, shady, urban garden in Nelson City to create an environmentally-sustainable business, prompted Emma Heke to dig up all her lawns and plant herbs and true tea plants two years ago. The property is spray-free and everything is grown organically as are the herbs Emma has people growing for her around the country. Those not grown in NZ come via a certified organic wholesaler… Fast forward to today and there are over 30+ tea blends with a wellness-focus and a thriving postal service as teas make there way all around New Zealand. There’s a zero-waste option for customers wanting their teas in plain paper bags or their own containers filled and a postal option whereby teas are wrapped in old newspapers! Conducting sales via the Heke Homemade Herbals Facebook page and markets means low overheads whereby the savings are passed onto customers as affordable teas. In the Nelson/Tasman area there are also retail outlets who appreciate the locally-grown teas such as The Organic Green Grocer at Nelson Environment Centre’s Ecoland in Nelson and TOAD Hall in Motueka and cafe’s such as Morri Street, Nelson or Dana’s Coffee Cart who sell their hot teas.
Winning the recent Innovation Award was a great boon and Emma hopes it will add weight to her aspirations for a commercial offshoot aiming to benefit all New Zealanders…watch this space!
