
Nelson Environment Centre
Nelson Environment Centre new building was officially opened at ribbon-cutting ceremony by Nelson MP and Minister for the Environment Nick Smith on Friday 25th February 2011. NEC is now located at 1 Braemar Place, upper Franklyn Street, Nelson South.
The former classrooms have now been renovated into a showroom of sustainability. The new location provides office space, community meeting and workshop rooms, and outdoor demonstration and education spaces on its half-hectare site. The garden is a prominent feature of the new centre its plantings are quick-growing and will also enable the centre to use the garden for educational purposes.
The Nelson Environment Centre is now the longest-surviving environmental centre in the country. Since the 1970s it has gone through several homes before settling in Braemar Place, leased from Braemar Eco Village at the top of Franklyn St. Derek Shaw the chairman of the NEC's governance committee notes that the new building is "a major milestone" for the centre.
More than 25 businesses have sponsored the centers many features. Community demonstration tools included worm farms, mud-brick building, composting, solar energy, a homemade solar hot-water system, rain-saving devices, insulation, a geodesic dome, and a biodigester.
