Open Orchards is an initiative to plant more fruit and nut trees on public land for all to enjoy!
Nelson Environment Centre (NEC) has taken over the Open Orchard Programme and your new contact is Elizabeth Hovell at NEC. Open Orchard is a programme funded by the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. It provides free fruit and nut trees to groups wanting to plant them on public land (council reserves) or in schools. It works on a first come first serve basis – as funds are limited!
Time frames are tight as planting needs to occur soon - especially for apple and pear trees. Other fruit and nut trees can be planted winter, spring or autumn but place an order with Elizabeth now so not to miss out.
If you are interested in finding out about the fruit trees available email Elizabeth at info@nec.org.nz and she can provide a list of the fruit trees available and the process involved.
